HGUC Zaku II

A proper Zaku, not the wannabe from SEED. This was a Garma Zabi custom Zaku, but I decided to paint it with the standard grunt unit colors a.k.a green. It was also my first experiment with epoxy putty and pla-plate. It may not be obvious, but I widened the torso by adding a piece of 1mm plaplate on each side and plugged the gaps using Tamiya putty (basic type).
I also split the front skirt armor so that they can move independently. I also added epoxy putty to the crotch and central chest (the black part) to make them stand out more. As for the head, I made the eye slit a bit narrower. Finally I added some plaplate to the right arm armor and the crotch area. Overall, this was the most amount of modifications I’ve ever done to one single kit. It may sound like a lot, but it didn’t alter the overall design of the Zaku by much.
In the spirit of the grunt unit theme, I decided to apply some weathering, namely bullet holes, some small dents on the armor edges and some paint chipping. Also applied some Zeon water-slide decals to complement the theme. I used brown-yellow acrylic wash to fill the panel lines.
The sad part was I broke the peg which connects the thigh to the hip. Tried to glue it back but it broke again when I tried to move the leg. Fortunately I managed to take some pics before it happened. So you BETTER appreciate these pics

One of my first kits with a custom paintjob. I’m not a big fan of Gundam Seed Destiny and since they tried to recycle U.C. designs, might as well give one a proper U.C. unit color scheme. What other perfect color scheme for a Zaku than the Black Tristar colors.
I bought ready-made Gundam colors for the Black Tristar color scheme. I did some minor operations on the kit including:
cutting the front skirt armor apart
turning the beam axe into a normal axe
replacing the sticker monoeye with leftover sprue from a beam saber
After gluing the parts and sanding (a lot of sanding), I sprayed the parts with primer. Then came the coloring. Masking parts were at a minimum, which was great. After panel-lining with grey acrylic wash, I applied some Zeon decals. Finally, I applied a generous amount of Mr Super Clear flat spray. I spent a couple of weeks on this kit, probably coz I’m a slow poke when it comes to gunpla.

The first 1/144 HG I bought. That was before the 1/100 scale came out. I fell for the samurai sword gimmick. The kit came with an additional booklet, a guide aimed at beginner modelers on how to paint, glue etc.. Came in very handy when I first started this hobby. Ended up buying almost everthing they recommended in the book.
For painting, I bought metallic green and gold Gundam markers. The red and white bits were painted using Mr. Hobby lacquer paint. The bicep parts were quite difficult to paint, especially when you’re a noob, like me. After the parts were painted, I applied black acrylic wash for panel lines (maybe a bit too black) and after that I sprayed it with Mr. Super Clear glossy finish
However, I overdid the glossy coating and decided to remove some of the super gloss from the kit. I bought Gunze’s flat color (it’s not actually color, it’s like a haze-colored gel). I mixed the gel with Mr Thinner and hand-painted on the glossy parts. Leave it to dry and voila… bye bye gloss. I also added a sticker on the right shoulder. I got it from Newtype magazine. Finally I dry-brushed some silver on the red-colored parts.
