Sinanju Head Display Base

This 1/48 scale Sinanju head came with the January 2011 issue of Gundam Ace. Following the Unicorn Head Display base, this was the second such head that was produced from the Unicorn OVA.
The whole thing was molded in red plastic, except for the clear part for the monoeye. So naturally, some painting (and masking) was required. First off, I sprayed most of the parts with black surfacer, including the underside of the base and the stand. For the chest crest, I sprayed Tamiya gold on it before hand-painting the black parts with Tamiya enamel black (similar method I used for my HGUC Sinanju). For the red parts, I used Mr Color Red Madder spray. After some minimal decal attachment and panel-lining, its done.
It’s a fairly simple build, but not so straight-forward painting. I used up plenty of masking tape for this but it was worth it. I managed to finish it in parallel with my HGUC Sinanju and they indeed do match each other. The stand is a bit cumbersome when you want to change positions, though. Compared to the Unicorn head, the Sinanju base is a bit wider and has no transforming gimmick, obviously. Overall, it a perfect complement for a HGUC Sinanju.

Gundam Bearbrick

One of the nice things about Japan is you can get nice Gundam-related stuff like these Bearbricks. This may be old news but they came as freebies with the Pepsi Nex which is a foul, sugar-free concoction. They haveĀ strings on top for you to attach to cellphones et cetera. There’s 16 types altogether, which meant that theoretically I have to buy 16 bottles of that nasty soft drink.
Anyway here’s the list of all 16 types: You nay notice they’re all mobile suits or characters from the 1st Gundam series.
1) RX-78-2 Gundam
2) Guncannon
3) GM
4) Zaku II
5) Char’s Zaku II
6) Z’gok
7) Char’s Z’gok
8) Gouf
9) Acguy
10) Dom
11) Char’s Gelgoog
12) Amuro Ray
13) Sayla Mass
14) Char Aznable
15) Gihren Zabi
16) Ramba Ral
In the end I only managed to get 13 types from the supermarket. I was missing the Gelgoog and two Z’goks. Eager to have all 16, I searched & bought the other 3 from Yahoo Auctions (without the soft drink thankfully). Although up to 3x(!) the normal price, but at least now I have all 16.
So I decided to have fun with my new camera and an ancient lens so here’s the outcome:
Can our heroes get out of this sticky situation? Stay tuned next week
Must be the beans I had last night…
So there you have it. They’re colorful little things, but there’s not much else you can do with it. Now I have to think about those bottles of Pepsi in my room.
Unicorn Gundam Head Display Base
January 3, 2010 at 11:11 pm | Posted in Miscellaneous | 2 CommentsTags: 1/48 scale, dengeki hobby, pearl spray, Unicorn gundam, unicorn head display base
This 1/48 scale head display base is a free gift that came with the January issue of Dengeki Hobby magazine. Well it wasn’t exactly free coz the price of the magazine was higher than the average issue. The head can be transformed into the Destroy and Unicorn modes pretty easily and at the back there is a stand for 1/144 scale models. The whole thing was molded in white except for the pink transparent parts. It already looks fine assembled as it is, but that won’t satisfy me.
After looking at some reference pics from the internet, I decided to give it a proper paint job. The white parts are sprayed with Gundam Color Spray 04: White pearl semi gloss, the neck sprayed with Mr Color Dark gray (2) and the underside and stand were colored with Mr Color German Gray. The V-fins were handpainted with enamel yellow. Since it didn’t come with any stickers for the eyes, I used some leftover foil stickers. And then I found out that the February issue of Dengeki Hobby came with proper eye stickers and other decals for the Unicorn head. It’s a bit too late now, I’ve already finished with it and won’t be buying another head just to use up them stickers. Anyway, I used some water decals on mine.
Here’s the finished product and I’ll follow it up with some pics with my SHCM-Pro Unicorn. Stay tuned
