Introduction:

After completing a straight build of the Space Assault Type with custom colors, I wanted to build a more traditional-looking GM Cannon. The major difference between the two is the lower legs.
I tried different types of legs; the bell bottom legs from the old MSV kit looked too retro, whereas the GM Cannon II legs were too fat. In the end I made the blasphemeous choice of attaching Act Zaku legs onto the GM Cannon.

Materials & methods:

You can read about the minor changes I made here.
For painting, I used the following colors:
Red parts: Red madder + a few drops of german grey
White parts: Off white + a few drops of orange yellow
Grey parts: German gray
There’s fewer parts to mask this time, so painting was relatively painless.
This time I’m also skipping weathering effects, so it’s just panel lining, decals, and flat topcoat.

Results:

Some action poses. Most of these were just recreated poses from the GM Cannon ROBOT Damashi promo pics. The weapons & shield were from my previous builds.

And finally some group photos. Because of the leg modification, the GM Cannon is taller than the Space Assault Type, which was unmodified.

Discussion:

This GM Cannon is very similar to the Space Assault Type (S.A.T), bar the legs, so my previous comments about the S.A.T also applies. The Act Zaku knee joint can bend more than 90 degrees, so a kneeling pose is no problem.
To be honest, the main motivation for this build was to recreate this box art pose. Hence the color scheme and the pointing finger mod. Pardon the bad photoshop:

But wait, there’s one more:

This is the second P-Bandai 1/144 GM Cannon (Space Assault Type) build. After completing a straight build for the first one, I’m planning on modifying this one a little bit. The head is just about the only unmodified part. The rest is as follows:

Body:
First off, I removed some bits from the chest, shown by the black arrows below:

Then, I glued 1mm square pipes to the top of the left shoulder:

Arms:
I decided to use the shoulder armor from the RX-78 revive kit. The rest of the arm is from the GM Cannon kit.

I added some extra hands from MS Builders parts. But if you look closely at the fisted hand, the thumb is somehow melded into the pointing finger. So I cut off the thumb, and transplanted a new thumb from another hand (trigger pose). The result is as follows:

Also, I cut off the finger from the original trigger pose hand, and glued a straight finger from MS Builder parts.

Crotch:
I filled the square gap on the crotch armor with basic putty.

Legs:
I tried out different pairs of legs for this build and I eventually decided on the lower legs from the Act Zaku kit. I glued some detail parts on the back of the leg:

And used the RG RX-78 part on the knees:

To connect the lower leg to the GM Cannon thighs, I had to modify the Zaku knee joints by cutting off some bits of plastic from the knee joint:

And from the inner part of the GM thighs:

I also covered the panel line gaps on the thighs with some basic puttty.

When fitting the thigh to the knee joint, I noticed some gaps, shown in the red arrows below:

So I glued some 1mm plaplate to both sides of the knee joint, and now the gap doesn’t look too bad:

I’ll be using the original GM Cannon feet, so to connect them to the Zaku legs, I glued the joints from the Zaku and GM legs together:

Weapon:
No additional weapons this time; just some minor mods to the shoulder cannon. I simply glued the beam spray gun barrel to the tip of the shoulder cannon. Also added some plaplate for extra details.

So here’s what it roughly  looks like:

Introduction:

For my first build of 2019, it’s another GM. I would have liked to include this GM Cannon in the Year of the GM lineup, but it arrived too late for me to finish it by the year’s end.
This is a P-Bandai release, and I actually bought 2 of them. For the first kit, I’m doing a straight Out-of-Box build, kinda. I decided to replicate the color scheme and decals from this illustration:

Materials & methods:

I made some very minor changes:
i) Replaced the blue visor with a red one from the GM Intercept kit.
ii) Removed safety nubs on the head antenna
iii) Added some plaplate to the right chest vent. But I kinda messed that one up.
iv) Drilled hole inside the shoulder cannon barrel
v) Added an extra bazooka from Kotobukiya M.S.G

For painting, I used the following colors:
Blue parts: Cobalt blue + a bit of intermediate blue
Grey parts: German gray
White parts: MS White
Verniers: Starbright duralumin; clear red for the insides

The bulk of the work involved masking and painting, and then finding the right decals. No weathering this time, just finished it with flat topcoat.

Discussion:

The GM Cannon Space Assault Type shares a lot in common with the GM Guard, GM Sniper Custom and GM Intercept kits. That means very good range of movement, good parts separation for easy painting, and very nice detailing.
However, there’s not a lot of extras in this kit. You get the shoulder cannon, a beam spray gun, and 3 hands. It would be nice to have a spare magazine for the shoulder cannon, or even a couple of extra hands with different poses.
Another minor gripe is about the shoulder cannon. It can’t tilt up or down too much and gets in the way when turning the head right. Thankfully the cannon can be easily removed.
Overall a solid kit, and a fun build. But the lack of extras is somewhat disappointing.
